The stylists may need to create an image or look from a specific time periods in history. This will require a specialist knowledge of that time period. with the popularity of certain styles and images used.

A modern or futuristic looking style would be very different from that of say 50 years ago. Fashion stylists in particular will have to build up their contacts with businesses and people who can supply fashion items which portray a particular time period. These businesses may include retail shops, theatrical suppliers, specialist shops, boutiques, manufacturers, fancy dress shops to name but a few.

The fashion stylist should always have more fashion outfits available at a photo shoot than are actually required so there is a choice available and spare outfits in case of emergencies.  It is normal for the fashion stylist and the photographer to source their items through visiting the suppliers before the date of the photo shoot and arranging the business details such as delivery, insurance, hire price, and selecting the garments which are required.
